SCORA, the Standing Committee on Sexual & Reproductive health including HIV/AIDS, a forum for active discussion for medical students interested in promoting reproductive health. Our overall goal is the implementation of an optimal understanding of the reproductive health problems and their prevention by medical students. In Egypt, SCORA now organizes many events for medical students and by medical students around Egypt.
1. Anti-Female Genital Mutilation -Anti FGM:
A 2005 report by UNICEF suggested that 97% of Egyptian women between the ages of 15 and 49 who have never been married have undergone some form of FGM or circumcision. A more recent study by the Egyptian government found that 50.3% of girls aged 10 to 18 have been circumcised. Despite a Ministerial decree prohibiting medical personnel from performing this practice, FGM/C in Egypt is still performed by physicians and other trained medical personnel in hospitals, public and private health clinics. 75% of circumcisions of daughters have been performed by trained medical personnel according to EDHS.
We aim at raising the awareness about the Religious, Legal & Clinical Aspects of FGM through awareness campaigns in universities campuses and to the public. We also aim at education and capacitation of medical students as future healthcare providers about the health risks and mind blowing hazards of the FGM on our society.
2. Adolescence Health:
Within various perspectives including psychology, biology, history, sociology, education, and anthropology the WHO defined adolescence as a multi- transitional period between childhood and adulthood, whose main purpose is the preparation of children for their adult roles, as well as equipping their smooth transition from one living circumstances to another. The forming of an adolescent’s identity is crucial in the life of an adolescence. An adolescent’s environment plays a huge role in their identity development. Studies done by the American Psychological Association have shown that adolescents with a less privileged upbringing have a more difficult time developing their identity. Additionally, the comprehensive lack of reproductive and
sexual education at times, and the presence of misconceptions and misgivings about reproductive health at other times, is beyond frustrating in a stage that the mere right information given can easily result in healthy reproductive life.
One primary goal is the establishment of an assessment-based study upon adolescence health in Egypt. Additionally, capacity building of medical students who are aware about adolescent health advanced information is one other goal which builds in the milestone goal of public awareness: adolescence age group.
3- Mr. & Ms. Breastestis:
“Governments, physicians, and health educators at all levels could do much more to help people change their behavior to avoid preventable cancers”. Some of the most common cancer types such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer have a high cure rate when detected early and treated according to best evidence. The principal methods of treatment are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Fundamental for adequate treatment is an accurate diagnosis by means of investigations involving imaging technology (ultrasound, endoscopy, radiography) and laboratory (pathology).
The project’s goals lie in the education of medical students about reproductive neoplasm's who will in return through different public health interventions advocate for awareness and early detection of those cancers.
